In this video, Dr. Gavin Sandercoe of Norwest Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery in Sydney details what body contouring procedure is all about and the effect is has on patients.
He says that body contouring is the excision of excess skin and fat from patients who have lost a lot of weight. However, scarring is an inevitable part of all body contouring procedures even though on the positive side, patients can get rid of the horrible folds and floppiness of loose skin.
Tightening of the skin around the abdomen is done through abdominoplasty and around the thighs and buttocks by a procedure called bottom lift. This is done on both men and women. Mediofa Plasty is another surgery done to remove excess skin from the inner thigh.
Body contouring Sydney scars take almost three years to mature. Even then, there is a high satisfaction rate among patients as they can wear any dress of their choice.
Body contouring generally covers the excision of excess skin and fat from somebody who’s lost a lot of weight. Many plastic surgeons going for bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery are seeing patients that have got folds and folds of skin that need removing to help patients get around with their normal day to day lives. Many patients tell me that once they were overweight it was more easy to fit into clothes because all their excess skin was filled up with fat and since they have lost the weight their skin is now deflated and getting around.
Things are a lot different for patients who have lost a lot of weight would have tighten up the skin in front of their abdomen or in abdominoplasty. We can get rid of the extra skin that has been stretched out on the thighs and the buttock. If we combine the two procedures that’s called a bottom lift. There are a couple of types of bottom lift and one scar pattern is generally more useful for guys where we have a flat bottom or flat thigh and ones more useful for women where we want some curves left over. The other things that we commonly do are Brachioplasty for removing the excess skin from arms and again mediofa plasty where we remove the extra skin from the inner thigh.
Depending on a couple of different types of thigh reduction procedures that have been popularized, many of the hidden scar ones don’t really deliver the results that the patients are after. So, like Brachioplasty, removal of the unwanted skin is all about getting rid of the horrible folds and the floppiness that the patients have. But there is no just good way of doing it without seeing scars that runs up into your crotch.
That being said, like all body contouring operations, scars will heal, they will mature. Body contouring scars tend to take more than three years to finally fade out into their thing whereas many other operations you know patients within one year their scars mature.
In a fat reduction procedure, we know of a few of patients who have got a very high satisfaction rate and again many patients accept the fact that they are going to have a scar, you can sit when your legs are together and it gives you much flexibility with the ability to wear dresses that are, at least to the knees. And patients that are comfortable with their scar, they can wear dresses above the knee as well.
