Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast Augmentation Surgery in Sydney
What happens during a breast augmentation in Sydney?
When you book your appointment to discuss having breast augmentation in Sydney, you will be sent a Patient Information Form. Completing this and returning it prior to your appointment will streamline your appointment. From the 1st July 2023 onwards, Federal Guidelines state that you will also need to complete a screening questionnaire for Body Dysmorphic Disorder when making your appointment.
Consultation appointments prior to breast augmentation in Sydney
At your first appointment, you should expect to spend about an hour with Dr Gavin Sandercoe. During this time he will take a thorough history and examination. Measurements of your chest wall and soft tissue will help determine what volume of implant will be suitable for you. Digital photographs are taken to assist with planning and explaining any asymmetries or limitations. 3D Imaging is used to help simulate a possible outcome from your surgery.
Dr Gavin Sandercoe will discuss what you wish to achieve from your procedure, and trial implants will be used to simulate the end result. The risks and expectations of the procedure are then discussed and you are given a take home information package to review before your second consultation. You are offered a second consultation to give you the opportunity to ask more questions that may have arisen after reading your information package, and to confirm your aims and choices for your breast augmentation in Sydney. The Federal Guidelines for Cosmetic Surgery that came into effect on 1st July 2023 classify breast augmentation surgery as purely cosmetic, so a second consult is mandatory.
The day of your breast augmentation in Sydney
Dr Gavin Sandercoe only performs breast augmentation in Sydney in accredited hospitals and day surgeries, ensuring that your safety is paramount. Prior to your operation, you will have planning marks drawn on you and a digital photograph taken.
You are put to sleep by a specialist anaesthetist (general anaesthetic), and pain relief and antibiotics are given through a drip before the operation is started. The antibiotic helps to prevent an infection from developing in the incisions, keeping you healthy and helping to improve your results.
The incision and pocket agreed upon are created whilst the implant is being soaked in antibiotic solution. The implants are then placed in the pockets and the patient is sat upright to check for symmetry. Drains may be placed into the pocket in rare circumstances. The incisions are then closed and dressings applied. Your surgical bra will be fitted before you wake up & go to the recovery room.
There are several adjunctive procedures that may need to be performed at the time of breast augmentation for ideal results. These will be discussed with you pre-operatively and arranged into the operation plan prior to your breast augmentation in Sydney. Such procedures include:-
• Correcting nipple position, length or inverted nipples
• Breast lift (mastopexy)
• Correction of breast deformity, such as constricted breast base
• Correction of breast asymmetry with different sized implants
Most breast augmentation procedures are performed as a day only procedure, so you will be able to go home after a few hours of recovery. If you have had breast augmentation as well as another procedure, it is likely that you will stay overnight. Dr Gavin Sandercoe will monitor you to ensure your safety during and after your breast augmentation in Sydney.
